City of Oaks Marathon FAQs

Q: Is the Raleigh City of Oaks Marathon a Boston qualifier?

A: Yes. The course is USATF certified, thus making the marathon eligible for use as a Boston Marathon qualifier.

Q: Is the course hilly?

A: Our marathon course has moderate hills as well as flat roads and greenway. The course scenery varies drastically along the course, going from downtown Raleigh to North Raleigh via the Raleigh Greenway system. A full course map and elevation profile is available on the Course Maps page.

Q: Will portajohns be available on the course?

A: Yes. Portajohns will be available at the start/finish area and approximately every 2 miles on the course.

Q: How far apart are aid stations and what will be served?

A: Aid/water stations will be located approximately every two miles on the race course. Water and sports will be provided at all water stations. Gu will be provided on the full marathon course only - after mile 10 - approximately every two miles. Food and snacks will also be provided at the North Hills water stop on the full marathon course at mile markers 16.5 and 18.5.

Q: Is there a time limit?

A: Yes. The time limit for the marathon and marathon relay is 6 hours (1pm). The time limit for the half marathon is 3:30 (10:30am). The time limit for the 10k and 5k is 2 hours. The time limit is a safety issue and applies to both runners and walkers alike. The roads on the course can only be closed for the allotted time frame. Runners must maintain a 14 minute/mile pace at all points on the course, the only exception to this pace is the 5k. If you are unable to do so, you will be required to move to the sidewalk and will no longer be considered a race participant; you must obey pedestrian laws. Please note, there is not a sag wagon available to pick up who are unable to complete the race.

Q: How many participants are expected?

A: More than 5,000 runners are expected across all distances. Registrations may be limted as follows:

  • Marathon - 1,500 participants
  • Marathon Relay - 150 relay teams
  • Half Marathon - 3,000 participants
  • 10k - 1,000 participants - We have sold out of this distance in the past!
  • 5k - 1,000 participants 
  • Kids' Mile - 250 participants

Q: May I wear my headphones?
A: Yes, as long as they don't interfere with your ability to follow instructions from race staff, police and race volunteers, interfere with your ability to compete safely, or interfere with other participants. Race staff reserves the right to disqualify you from the race and remove you from the race course.

Q: Are strollers and baby joggers allowed?

A: Yes, strollers are permitted in the half marathon, 10k, 5k and Kids' Mile events. Participants with strollers will need to start in the back for each event.

Q: Are pace groups available?

A: Yes, pace groups will be provided as follows:

  • Full Marathon - Finish times of 3:00 | 3:15 | 3:30 | 3:45 | 4:00 | 4:15 | 4:30 | 4:45 | 5:00 | 5:15 | 5:30
  • Half Marathon - Finish times of 1:30 | 1:45 | 2:00 | 2:15 | 2:30 | 2:45 | 3:00

Q: I need to make a change to my registration information. How can I do this?

A: Please contact our City of Oaks customer service team to update any information on your registration! You can change your race distance by clicking here

Q: When is packet pick-up?
A: There will be no race day packet pick-up. Packet pick-up will be held Saturday Nov. 3. from 9 am - 5 pm at the McKimmon Conference and Training Center. (1101 Gorman St, Raleigh, NC 27606)

Q: Can I have someone else pick up my race packet for me?
A: Yes. If you need someone else to pick up your race packet at the expo, your designee will will need a photocopy of your driver's license or some other photo ID.

Q: Can I switch races?

A: Yes, changing races will be allowed only for the marathon, half marathon, and 10k. There is no processing fee to change races. For downgrades, no refunds will be issued. For upgrades, the additional registration fee will be charged. Click here to change your race distance. Change distances requests must be made 10 days prior to the race. All other requests must be made in person at the expo. 

Per USATF rules, if you decide to change races unofficially, you will be disqualified. You must run the race for which you registered.

Q: I have registered for this year's race, but am unable to compete. Can I get a refund, deferral, or transfer my registration to someone else?
A: Sorry, we do not allow refunds or person-to-person transfers. You can defer your registration to next year's race for $15 by completeing the race deferral form here. You must complete the deferral request form prior to Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at 11:59pm. Deferral requests after this time will not be accepted.

Please note: All runners participating using another runner's bib will be disqualified.

Q: I forgot to apply a discount code when I registered, can I get a refund of the discount amount? 
A: No, unfortunately we are unable to retroactively apply any discount and refund the difference.

Q: Will baggage check be available?
A: Yes, there will be a baggage check area available at the start/finish area across from the NC State Bell Tower. Look for the sign marked "Bag Check."

Q: Do you provide free entries for elite athletes?

Q: How do I obtain my award?

A: Awards for overall and age group winners will be distributed on race day at the awards tent. Awards will not be mailed or available to claim after race day, so be sure to claim your award on race day!
